Abstract: One of the main and necessary discussions of the current consumer society concerns the consumption pattern of a large major- ity of the Earth’s inhabitants. This behavior has generated serious and negative consequences for the quality of life and for human and envi- ronmental health. The objective is to address the new patterns of pro- duction and consumption, as defined in the Sustainable Development Goals, more specifically in SDG 12. We use the systemic-constructivist methodological perspective, considering reality as a construction of an observer. Thus, the study presented here involving SDG 12 and the role of the consumer is important for ensuring the survival of current and future generations on a planet with finite resources. In this context, the role of the information principle is also presented, essential for the consumer to change his habits and start to make his choices conscious- ly, assisting in the implementation of the SDG 12 goal, namely, to ensure production and consumption patterns sustainable. It remains clear that behavior change must occur on the part of consumers, sup- pliers and state institutions. The search for a balanced environment, involving human and environmental health, as well as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 12, demonstrates the need for a connection between numerous areas of knowledge, including environ- mental and consumer law, in order to rethink and reconstruct the rights and duties of suppliers and consumers.
